Land Acknowledgement

We are thankful to be welcomed here on this land in friendship. We acknowledge that we didn’t always extend friendship and fairness to the Indigenous people who were here before us. We want to do better.

We recognize that we were not the first people here, that the Anishinaabe and Mohawk people were here before us and are still here. We value and want to learn more about their teachings and ways of being on the land where we live, work and play. We also want to ‘go gently’ upon Mother Earth – which the Anishinaabe people call walking a good red road.

When we walk a good red road, we learn how to leave only footprints and take only pictures and memories. We think about how we treat the roots beneath us, the crawling insects, the swaying grasses, the towering trees, the flying birds. We learn from them; about how to take responsibility for our actions so that this land and these animals and these trees will remain for the people that come after us so that they may also learn how to go gently on Mother Earth.
