Proper Hand Hygiene

We all have a role to play in practicing optimal hand hygiene every day and in every setting. Together we can make a difference and reduce the spread of germs by always practicing good hand hygiene.

Wash your hands frequently.

  • Hand Washingbefore and after eating
  • after using the bathroom
  • after coughing or sneezing
  • after touching surfaces that may have been contaminated

15 - 20 seconds of hand washing with warm water and soap helps remove bacteria and viruses. That is equivalent to singing a song such as “Happy Birthday”.

Alcohol hand sanitizer that contains 60 -90% alcohol base is very effective and can be used when there is not visible soil. Keep a supply handy at home, at work, at school and in the car. It should be used with supervision for young children.

Here at Gateway we ask that our clients use the alcohol sanitizer upon entering and exiting the centre or program locations in the community. As a client or family member you have the right to ask your healthcare provider to clean his/her hands before and after providing services.
